Chemical Weapons Convention Signatories, Ratifiers

144 nations have ratified or acceded to the CWC

The following fact sheet, issued by the State Department's Bureau of Arms Control, lists those nations that have become signatories to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) and those that have ratified it or acceded to it, with accompanying dates of ratification:

Chemical Weapons Convention Signatories/Ratifiers

The Chemical Weapons Convention bans the development, production, acquisition, stockpiling, retention, and direct or indirect transfer of Chemical Weapons. It also prohibits the use or preparation for use of CW and the assistance, encouragement, or inducement of anyone else to engage in activities prohibited by the CWC.

The CWC entered into force on April 29, 1997, following ratification by 65 signatories. As of November 12, 2001, 144 countries have either ratified or acceded to the CWC. Another 34 are signatories.
